The Chardonnay grape is thought to have come from Lebanon, and in France Chardonnay became
the only grape allowed to be grown in Chablis, Burgundy.
Chardonnay popularity has blossomed immensely in the past forty years, growing to the point where it is now the most popular white wine available. Chardonnay is never considered a "rich man's drink," a surprisingly good chardonnay can be had for just under $10.
Chardonnay is generally dry and thus goes best with poultry or seafood; items like lobster or scallops. It can even compliment a light red meat dish. Good cheeses for Chardonnay include Gruyere, Provolone, and Brie.
